Gayle, 41, last played for the West Indies in August 2019 and his recall comes alongside 39-year-old fast bowler Fidel Edwards as selectors turn to the veterans.
The three-match series will be played between March 3-7 at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua.
Gayle enjoyed an outstanding 2020 Indian Premier League campaign with Kings XI Punjab, smashing 288 runs in seven knocks with an average of 41.14.
The ‘Universe Boss’ playfully hinted last year that he could play until he was 45 and his IPL displays backed that up, lifting Kings XI towards the back end of the season.
“Chris Gayle has performed very well in recent tournaments and the selection panel thinks that he can still add great value to our team,” Cricket West Indies lead selector Roger Harper said.
“Fidel Edwards has been selected to give the bowling the potent firepower needed.”
Both selections come with the 2021 T20 World Cup to played in India later this year in mind.
As we build towards the defence of the T20 World Cup, the opportunity is being taken to determine our best team and squad as we go forward,” Harper said.
One player who isn’t in the squad is Andre Russell who is still recovering from COVID-19.
Kieron Pollard will skipper both the T20I and ODI sides, while Test captain Jason Holder returns after sitting out the Bangladesh series.
Jason Holder has shown his all-round value in this format in recent times and after missing a few series he will add depth and experience to the squad,” Harper said.
