No Harris & Khawaja in Australia Test squad

Australia's Travis Head and teammates celebrate retaining the Ashes after drawing the series

Travis Head, Cameron Bancroft and Joe Burns have all been included in Australia’s 14-man squad for the first Test against Pakistan at the Gabba next Thursday.

The trio’s selection means Marcus Harris and Usman Khawaja have missed out, although there is likely to only be space for two of the batsmen in Australia’s final XI.

Youngster Will Pucovski had already ruled himself out of contention, due to mental health issues.

Michael Neser and James Pattinson have also been included but are likely to sit out, with Patrick Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon to lead the attack.

Speaking about the batsmen, national selector Trevor Hohns said: “Travis Head scored a hundred against a very good New South Wales attack just a few weeks ago and also offers the option of part-time off-spin.

Matthew Wade was superb as a specialist batsman through last summer, had a solid Ashes Series with two hundreds and strong start to the current domestic season.

“We anticipate Matthew and Travis will give us a strong middle order in support of the top four.

Cameron Bancroft is someone who has the ingredients of what we believe makes a good Test cricketer and rounds out our batting group in the squad.”

Hohns’ comments suggest that Bancroft is the likely batsmen to carry the drinks.

Head had been dropped for the final Test of the Ashes replaced by all-rounder Mitchell Marsh who took a five-wicket haul in the match but has since injured his hand.
