For the final match in the series in St. Lucia, the West Indies were unchanged, whilst England, who lost the toss and were asked to bat first, brought in Tom Curran for the injured Liam Plunkett.
England were soon struggling, losing Jonny Bairstow, bowled by Cottrell in the third over for 11, and then Joe Root, caught by Cottrell off Jason Holder at the start of the next. They then lost their third wicket when Alex Hayles who had scored 23, was deceived by the extra bounce from a ball from Carlos Braithwaite, and was caught behind. Then came the wicket that the West Indies really wanted, with captain Eoin Morgan out for 18, caught by Cottrell off the bowling of Oshane Thomas.
Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler looked to play England out of trouble, but then Stokes was out for 18, caught behind trying to fend off a short ball from Braithwaite. Buttler and Moeen Ali added 23, but then there came a dramatic collapse. First Ali was caught behind off Thomas for 12, followed two overs later by Chris Woakes, who gave a catch to Braithwaite off Thomas without scoring. Two balls later, Buttler skied Thomas to fine leg, falling for 23, before Rashid fell to a short delivery from Holder, caught behind for no runs. Thomas then picked up his fifth wicket, as Curran was yorked, with the visitors bowled out for just 113, with nearly 22 overs still to be bowled. Thomas finished with career-best figures of 5 for 28.
In reply Chris Gayle set off like an express train, battering Woakes for 39 from his first two overs. His opening partner John Campbell was more circumspect, and it was he who became the first to fall, bowled by Mark Wood for a single. Chris Gayle though showed no signs of stopping, and he continued his assault, with Mark Wood also getting his share of punishment, before Wood had a modicum of revenge by bowling him for 77. Scored off just 27 balls, it contained 9 sixes and 5 fours.
Although they were chasing a lost cause by this time, Woakes did claim another wicket for England, bowling Shai Hope for 13. However, Darren Bravo and Shai Hetmyer then scored the runs that were needed as the target was reached with just one ball of the 13th over bowled. Bravo was undefeated at the end on 7 whilst Hetmyer was 11 out.
Oshane Thomas was named man of the match.
