Crowned as the first Boxing Association (WBA) Light flyweight Champion, Jaime Rios was born on August 14, 1953 in Panama City, Panama. During this time and up to about 1970’s Panama was known to be the height of the boxing world. Panama began producing boxers that has taken over matches around the world and becoming champions in their field.

Not like the rest of the boxers which Panama has produced, Jaime Rios was exceptional. He made a mark by being ranked as the seventh in the list of World Boxing Champions from Panama. From that time on he was then known as “cieguito” an alias that meant “blind man”. This was because Rios stands only 5 feet and 1 inch tall and is popular in using his Orthodox stance.

He was responsible for making Panama boxing technique popular and was better known as “Pai pai y no estoy”. This Panamanian boxing technique consisted of hitting the opponent and then stepping back.

On August 23, 1975; Panamanian boxers was hailed the first WBA Flyweight Champion. He defeated Rigoberto Marcano of Venezuela. On July 2, 1976, the title was unfortunately taken from them by a Dominican Republic boxer by the name of Juan Antonio Guzman.

Though he tried his best to take back the lost title, he was not fortunate enough to do so. He went on to a match with Yoko Gushiken; a Japanese boxer. Though he gave a close fight during the match he still was not fortunate enough to be given the chance to grab the title back.

Rios now holds a record of 28 fights: 22-5 wins by knockout and 1 draw.
