Marco Barrera
Marco Antonio Barrera – born 17th of January 1974 in Mexico City, Mexico; he is more commonly known as “Baby-faced Assassin”
Barrera is a Mexican boxing world champion who made a very impressive amateur career in the sport where he had 55 wins out of 58 bouts; after which, he turned to professional boxing. He was only 15 years old when he did so –smashing David Felix by a knockout in the second round on the 22nd of November 1989. This set off the beginning of a 39 fight win streak
It was in 1990 when Barrera rose to fight quality opposition when he beat veteran Ivan Salazar by a decision in eight rounds. In 1992, during the Mexican National Junior Bantamweight Championship held on April 1, he won his first professional title smashing Justino Suarez by a decision in twelve rounds. By 1994, in Argentina, he smashed then World champion Carlos Salazar by decision in ten rounds. He also beat another former World champion Eddie cook at the end of the year. In 1995, he became WBO’s Bantamweight world champion held in Anaheim, California on March 31, beating Puerto Rican boxer Daniel Cobrita by decision in 12 rounds. This was his first world title.
In his fight with skilled Filipino boxer, Manny Pacquiao – where he had lost by knockout on the 12th round – it was reported that Barrera had undergone a surgery where a metal plate was inserted in his forehead, prior to the event. He also belongs to an affluent Mexican family. His brother, Jorge Barrera is also a boxer. Barrera’s fights are promoted by the Golden Boy Promotions held another world renowned boxer, Oscar “Golden Boy” de la Hoya. Additionally, he trains at de la Hoya’s training facility located in Big Bear, California.
Currently, Barrera’s record is at 74 bouts fought with 66 victories, 43 wins via KO, and 7 losses with 1 no contests decision.
