René Manuel "Chulo" Santiago García was born on April 10, 1992, in Humacao, Puerto Rico. The Puerto Rican fighter is 160 cm tall and has a wingspan of 159 cm.He has competed in the Light Flyweight division throughout his professional tenure. He fights from an orthodox position and has established himself as a key figure in Puerto Rican boxing, fighting out of his hometown of Humacao.
Career
Santiago began his professional campaign in November 2014. He worked his way up the regional ranks, capturing the WBO Latino Light Flyweight Title in 2022. In October 2023, he secured a significant victory by knocking out Kevin Vivas in the 12th round to win the WBO Interim Light Flyweight Title in Nicaragua.He challenged WBO world champion Jonathan Gonzalez in March 2024 in an all-Puerto Rican clash but lost a competitive unanimous decision. Undeterred, Santiago rebounded later that year with a victory over Ricardo Astuvilca to position himself for another title shot.
In March 2025, Santiago traveled to Tokyo, Japan, to face Shokichi Iwata for the WBO Light Flyweight World Title. In a stunning upset, Santiago defeated Iwata via unanimous decision to capture the world championship. He is scheduled to defend his title against Kyosuke Takami in December 2025.
