He has competed in the Bantamweight division, a class where he is now a world champion. He fights from an orthodox stance and is based out of Guadalajara, Jalisco. His nickname, "Chispa," means "Spark" in Spanish, referencing his explosive power.

Medina began his professional campaign in December 2017 and fought primarily in Mexico throughout his early career, building an impressive knockout ratio.
