Russell began his professional campaign in May 2017 with a first-round TKO victory over Josh Ross. He started his career with 17 consecutive knockout victories.His notable wins include a 2022 TKO victory against former world champion Viktor Postol and a 2022 knockout of Rances Barthelemy.
His undefeated streak ended in June 2024, when he faced Alberto Puello for the vacant Interim WBC Title, losing a split decision. This was his first professional defeat.
Russell rebounded from the loss and, in March 2025, defeated Jose Valenzuela by a unanimous decision to capture the WBA Super Lightweight World Title.
