Junior Ilunga Makabu was born on November 8, 1987, in Kananga, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo). The Congolese fighter stands 183 cm tall and possesses a wingspan of 188 cm.

He has competed primarily in the cruiserweight class for his entire professional run. Makabu is recognized for the formidable knockout power in his left hand, fighting from a southpaw position.

He comes from a notable fighting family, as his younger sibling is the top heavyweight contender Martin Bakole. Makabu has bases in both his native Congo and South Africa.

Career

Makabu launched his professional campaign in 2008, suffering a stunning first-round defeat. Displaying immense resolve, he rebounded to build a long undefeated streak based on his devastating power. His first shot at glory came in a rivalry with Tony Bellew for the vacant WBC title in 2016. In a dramatic UK showdown, Makabu dropped Bellew early before being stopped himself.

Undeterred, he worked his way back to the top and achieved his championship dream in 2020 by capturing the very same vacant WBC belt. After two successful defenses, his reign was challenged in a rivalry with Badou Jack. In their 2023 encounter, Makabu lost his title via stoppage.

He later attempted to reclaim the vacant belt but was stopped by Norair Mikaelian.
