Career
He turned pro in February 2001. His first fight was a win against Jose Lazaro. Less than a month later, he lost to Rosendo Sanchez. His first fights were held in the United States of America. His first fight in the Philippines was held in May 2002 and it was a win against Noel Alma.
He won his first title in September 2002. It was the WBO Asia Pacific Flyweight title. In January 2006, he picked up the North American Boxing Federation Super Flyweight title after he won against Kahren Harutyunyan. He defended this title against Oscar Andrade in October 2006.
In July 2007, he won the IBF World Flyweight and the IBO World Flyweight titles. He defended both three times. Then in August 2009, he picked up the WBA Interim World Super Flyweight title. In December 2010, he picked up the vacant WBC Continental Americas Bantamweight title.
He defended both his WBO and WBC titles against Omar Andres Navaez in October 2011. Then in February 2012, he won the WBO World Super Bantamweight title. He defended this and added the IBF World Super Bantamweight title in July 2012. His second professional loss came in April 2013. It was against Guillermo Rigondeaux.
His next title was the WBA Super World Featherweight title. He won this in May 2014 after he beat Simpiwe Vetyeka. He then lost it to Nicholas Walters in October 2014. His next fight was a win against William Prado in March 2015. In December of that year, he beat Cesar Juarez and won the WBO World Super Bantamweight title. He defended this in April 2016 before he lost it in November 2016.
In November 2018, he won the WBA Super World Bantamweight and the WBC Diamond Bantamweight titles. He defended both against Stephon Young before he lost them to Naoya Inoue. His most recent title win was the WBC World Bantamweight title, which he won in May 2021 and defended in December 2021. In June 2022, he lost to Inoue again. It cost him his WBC and WBA titles, as well as the chance to get the IBF World Bantamweight title.
