EuroCup

EuroCup

The EuroCup, also known as European Cup Basketball or 7Days EuroCup, is an annual basketball event in Europe organized and governed by EuroLeague Basketball.

Established in 2002, it is the second-tier event for European Club Basketball, just below the EuroLeague with the winner of the EuroCup automatically earning a spot in the EuroLeague the following year.

History

Founded in 2022, it started life as the ULEB Cup – named after the Union of European Leagues of Basketball. They rebranded in 2008 into the EuroCup.

Since then, it has undergone a number of name changes. Since 2016, it has been known as 7Days EuroCup, reflecting its current sponsorship deal with Chipita.

Format

The format of the EuroCup has evolved since then. Currently, 20 teams participate in the regular season, divided into two groups of 10 teams each.

The teams play against each other in a round-robin format, with home and away games.

The top eight teams from each group advance to the Top 16 phase, where they are divided into four groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each Top 16 group qualify for the quarterfinals, which are played in a best-of-three series format.

The semifinals and finals are also played in a best-of-three format, with the winner being crowned the EuroCup champion and earning a spot in the following season's EuroLeague.

Arena Standards

EuroCup Basketball is a big event for most Europeans where their countries are competing against each other.

During the 2012-13 season, it was determined that the seating capacity of a hosting arena would have been at least 2,500 with an additional 200 VIP seats. In comparison, a EuroLeague arena would need to accommodate at a minimum – 10,000 people.
