In basketball, an Assist happens when a player passes the ball to a teammate who scores a basket right after receiving the ball or just after one dribble.
In the statistic sheet, the player who passed the ball earns an assist. An assist statistic is also awarded when a basket is given as a result of defensive goaltending.
No more than one assist can be recorded per field goal since the pass directly before a shot taken is considered an assist. Point Guards tend to get the most assists as their main role is that of ball passer and ball handler.
National Basketball Association players who have the highest assist statistics include John Stockton, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, LeBron James, and Steve Nash. Magic Johnson, Russell Westbrook, and Oscar Robertson also have high assists statistics.
