The San Francisco Warriors were a professional basketball team playing in the National Basketball Association from 1962 to 1970. The Warriors are now called the Golden State Warriors.
The team was originally found in 1946 by Peter Tyrell in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Warriors were relocated to San Francisco in 1962 when they were bought by the Bay Area Credit Card Company. The team color was changed to blue, yellow and golden gate orange. The logo was a blue shadowed warrior in fighting position against a basketball, there was a lightning bolt in the warrior’s hand which was connected to the W that spelt Warriors. The team played most of their home games in the Cow Palace Arena. The Warriors were coached by Bob Feerick. Wilt Chamberlain a.k.a. Wilt the Stilt continued to play with the team.

In 1962, Wilt Chamberlain finished with an average of 44.8 points per game and 24.3 rebounds per game for the 1962- 1963 season. The team however did not make it to the playoffs. In 1963, Alex Hannum was appointed as coach. The Warriors topped the Western Division that year and played the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics. The Celtics however defeated the Warriors to win their 6th consecutive NBA Championship Title. In 1964, the Warriors traded Wilt Chamberlain to the Philadelphia 76ers. Chamberlain was later inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. In 1965, the Warriors drafted Rick Berry who won the Rookie of the Year. However the warriors still could not qualify for the playoffs. In 1966, the Warriors showed tremendous improvement and topped the Western Division finishing with 44 wins and 37 losses. The Warriors defeated the St. Louis Hawks to play in the NBA Finals against the Philadelphia 76ers. The 76ers were led by former Warrior, Wilt Chamberlain who ensured the 76ers victory and the 1966 NBA Championship. After struggling and occasionally making it to the playoffs the San Francisco Warriors decided to move to Oakland to become the Golden State Warriors.
In a total of 729 games the Warriors played as the San Francisco Warriors, they won 330 games and lost 399 games.
