Bowens attended Fannie Carter High School in Okolona, Mississippi, before playing college basketball for Grambling State University.Professional Career
After going undrafted, Bowens fulfilled his military service and played with a U.S. touring team in Central and South America, as well as with the Harlem Clowns exhibition squad.He began his ABA career with the Denver Rockets in 1967. He moved to the New York Nets for the 1968–69 season.
Bowens then played for the New Orleans Buccaneers in 1969–70, and later joined the Hazleton Bullets in the Eastern Basketball Association for the 1973–74 season.
