Bates turned pro in 2023, selected in the 2nd round of the 2023 NBA Draft, chosen by the Cleveland Cavaliers. In July 2023, he signed a two-way contract with the team, which also allowed him to play for the Cleveland Charge in the NBA G League.In 2024, he played in the NBA G League Next Up Game.
