High School and College Career
He attended Lincoln High School in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Later, he transferred to Ypsi Prep Academy in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
He committed to play college basketball for the University of Memphis and was there from 2021 to 2022. Later, he transferred to play for Eastern Michigan University and was there from 2022 to 2023.
Professional Career
Bates turned pro in 2023, selected in the 2nd round of the 2023 NBA Draft, chosen by the Cleveland Cavaliers. In July 2023, he signed a two-way contract with the team, which also allowed him to play for the Cleveland Charge in the NBA G League.
In 2024, he played in the NBA G League Next Up Game.
