High School and College Career
Barnes attended Central High School in Providence before joining Providence College from 1971 to 1974.During his collegiate career, he was a key figure in the Friars' success, leading them to their first NCAA Final Four appearance in 1973 alongside teammates Ernie DiGregorio and Kevin Stacom.
In his senior year, Barnes was named a Consensus First-Team All-American and led the nation in rebounding with an average of 18.7 rebounds per game. He holds several records at Providence College.
Professional Career
Selected second overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1974 NBA Draft, Barnes chose to play in the American Basketball Association (ABA) for the Spirits of St. Louis instead.He was named ABA Rookie of the Year in 1975 and made two ABA All-Star appearances (1975, 1976).
After two successful seasons in the ABA, Barnes transitioned to the NBA, playing for the Detroit Pistons, Buffalo Braves, Boston Celtics, and San Diego Clippers from 1976 to 1980.
