He played for the Stags for one season before joining the Indianapolis Olympians from 1950 to 1953. During his time with the Olympians, Barnhorst appeared in two NBA All-Star Games (1952, 1953) and was a key player for the team.

Barnhorst later played for the Baltimore Bullets in the 1953-54 season and concluded his NBA career with the Fort Wayne Pistons in 1954.
