Born on November 3, 1982, in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, she has carved a niche in the sport, currently playing for the New York Liberty in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

Early Life and High School Career

Growing up in a sports-oriented family, with an older sister and three brothers, Janel honed her skills at Stevens Point Area Senior High (SPASH). Her high school career was nothing short of remarkable, as she led her team to a 59-11 record in her last three years. During her senior year, she averaged 19.4 points per game and propelled her team to a runner-up finish in the 2001 Wisconsin Division I State Tournament. Her exceptional performance earned her the Wisconsin Player of the Year award, which she shared with Mistie Bass, along with a spot as an AAU All-American.

Collegiate Success

After high school, Janel took her talents to the University of Minnesota, where she played for the Golden Gophers. Over her four years, she became a key player, starting every game alongside notable teammate Lindsay Whalen. McCarville ranks among the top five in every major statistical category for the women’s team, boasting remarkable records including the NCAA record for the most rebounds in a tournament with 75, averaging an impressive 15 rebounds per game.

Professional Journey

In 2005, Janel was selected as the #1 overall draft pick by the Charlotte Sting in the WNBA Draft. Although her rookie season was plagued by injuries and underwhelming statistics, her career took a turn when the Sting folded in 2007. She was claimed by the New York Liberty in the dispersal draft, where she quickly established herself as a starter. By the end of her first season with the Liberty, McCarville's hard work paid off when she was named the Most Improved Player of the 2007 season, highlighting her resilience and determination to succeed in the league.
