Last month, Joel Embiid announced that he had officially become an American citizen. How

Embiid has the choice to play for either the United States or France in international competitions and he is yet to choose.

The 2023 FIBA World Cup will be hosted in Asia by Indonesia, The Philippines, and Japan. The 2024 Olympics will be hosted in France. Embiid would be a tremendous addition to the French team for both events.

“I know he met some of our players to discuss,” France coach Vincent Collet said in an interview with the Associated Press Thursday. “I think he should play with us. But we will see. We will respect his decision whatever it is.”

The French team took home the Silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Others players who will likely be playing on the French team are Rudy Gobert, Evan Fournier, and Nicholas Batum.

Embiid does not have to make a decision just yet. His new American citizenship might make him choose to play for the US instead.

“Now he has both nationalities, and he has to choose one basketball nationality, which is not the same,” Collet said. “So, that is a choice. Nobody can do anything to change it.”

Embiid has been playing for the 76ers since 2014 and has been named an NBA All-Star since 2018. In 2022, he became the NBA scoring champion.
