The documentary will focus on the events in 2008 that led to the forming of and the success of the so-called ‘Redeem Team’.
The 2004 failure of America to impress at the Athens Olympics led to an overhaul and to forming of a basketball team led by Kobe Bryant and James. They went on to win the gold at the Olympics and ‘redeemed’ the US’s reputation as a giant in international basketball.
The documentary is set to debut on Netflix on October 7, 2022.
“In 2008, I played with heroes of mine, all stars, friends, and future teammates,” Wade said in a statement.
“Outside of winning and showing the world that we were still the most dominant, our other big challenge was changing the perception of what everyone thought about the NBA and USA Basketball! I’m excited for everyone to get an opportunity to go behind the scenes and see all the work that went into this iconic team.”
The documentary is directed by Jon Weinbach and is done in collaboration with the International Olympic Committee. The partnership with the IOC ensures unprecedented and behind-the-scenes footage of the team.
Weinbach is no stranger to working with the NBA, he had also previously produced “The Last Dance”. It focused on Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls which premiered in 2020.
That 2008 team was an All-Star dream. It featured Kobe Bryant as team captain. Also on the roster were both James and Wade. They also had Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, and Carmelo Anthony.
