In tennis, an Alternate is a player or a team that gains entry into a tournament when the original player or team withdraws from said tournament.
Alternates are on standby to take the place of any missing competitors. They are ordered on an alternate list based on their ranking. As players withdraw before a tournament, alternates fill those open spots.
Alternates must be ready to compete on short notice if called upon.
