The Chile Open is a professional tennis tournament with a rich history dating back to 1930 when it started as the Chile International Championships. It is known as the Chile Dove Men+Care Open for sponsorship reasons.
Originally played as a combined men's and women's event, the tournament has been held in various Chilean cities, primarily Santiago and Viña del Mar. The tournament is played on clay surface.
Tournament Evolution
The event has gone through several transformations over the decades. From 1930 to 1972, it was part of the ILTF South American Circuit, before becoming part of the Grand Prix circuit (1976-1983).After a brief hiatus, the tournament returned in 1993 when the Fillol brothers acquired organizing rights following Brazil's suspension of three ATP events. The tournament is now part of the ATP Tour 250 series and the Latin American Golden Swing.
Notable History
The tournament faced several challenges, including a format change in 2007 to a 24-player round-robin system, which was quickly reversed to the traditional 32-player format in 2008.After sponsorship issues led to its suspension in 2014, the tournament made a successful comeback in 2020 in Santiago, where it's currently played at Club Deportivo Universidad Católica.
