The Argentina Open is a professional tennis tournament played each year in Buenos Aires.

About

The Argentina Open started in 1927 as the Argentina International Championships and is played at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club, which can hold 5,500 spectators. From 1928 to 1987, the tournament included both men’s and women’s events, but then became men’s only until 2021 when women’s competition returned.

Today, it’s part of the ATP Tour 250 series and features men’s singles and doubles matches played on outdoor clay courts. The tournament takes place each February in the Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires.

Between 1970 and 1989, it was part of the Grand Prix tennis circuit, including two years (1970-71) as a Grand Prix Super Series event.

This tournament is separate from the Argentine Championship, and was the country’s national tennis competition held from 1918 to 1997 at a different venue, the Tennis Club Argentino.

Sponsorship

The Argentina Open has gone through several name changes throughout its history.

It started as the Argentina International Championships (1921-1969), then became the South American Open (1969-1974), and was later known as ATP Buenos Aires (1978-80, 1993-95).

The tournament has also been called Copa AT&T and Copa Telmex when these companies were sponsors. Currently, the tournament is supported by the City of Buenos Aires but doesn’t have a main sponsor.

While it began as a combined men’s and women’s event in 1928, the women’s competition was discontinued in 1987 before returning in 2021.

WTA Argentine Open

The WTA Argentine Open is a women’s tennis tournament played in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

While it originally ran from 1928 to 1987 alongside the men’s event, it took a 34-year break before returning in 2021.

Its return in 2021 marked an important moment for women’s tennis in Argentina, as it was the country’s first professional women’s tournament in over three decades.
