The National Bank Open is a professional tennis tournament that is jointly hosted by Montreal and Toronto. It is the Canadian Open and in 2021, it was billed as the National Bank Open presented by Rogers.

The 2021 edition is the 131st edition for the men’s tournament and the 119th edition for the women’s tournament. It is billed as one of the longest-running and most historical tennis tournaments in the world. It is the second-oldest in the world, after Wimbledon.

The National Bank Open has been played annually since 1881 and it has had 131 editions. It is usually held in the second week of August and it is a joint ATP and WTA event. The ATP event is held in Toronto while the WTA event is held in Montreal.

It is an ATP Masters 1000 and a WTA 1000 event. As of 2021, it is sponsored by Rogers, a telecommunications company based in Canada.

Venues and Courts

The Montreal end of the event is hosted at the IGA Stadium while the Toronto branch of the Canadian Open is hosted at the Aviva Centre. Both have tennis courts with hard surfaces.

Before 2011, the men’s and women’s events were at separate times. The tournaments also switch locations between Montreal and Toronto. For even-numbered years, the men’s tournaments are hosted in Montreal.

Past Names

Prior to being called the National Bank Open, the event was called the Rogers Cup from 2005 to 2019. From 2001 to 2004, it was known as the Canada Masters and the Rogers AT&T Cup.

From 1968 to 1996, it was known as the Canadian Open and before that, it was known as the Canadian Championships.
