Challenge Round

A Challenge Round is a form of competition in the final round, where the champion is being challenged by an opponent for the championship.

It's a ladder with the names of the players with an agreement that whosoever will win the match is based on the number of sets and the time the matches need to be played.

History of Challenge Round

The Challenge Round was used as early as the 18th century for the Wimbledon Championship and the US Open Championship.

In 1921, the winners from last year's competition were automatically challenged by several opponents for them to retain their titles. Since then, the Challenge Round has been used to choose the latest year's champions.

The System of Challenge Round in Tennis

The Challenge Round is systematized in a pyramid form, where the player's name is displayed from the bottom to the top. The lower player can be called the "challenge" to compete with the higher-placed player.

If the challenger beats the higher-placed player, then they would switch places.

The Thrill in Challenge Round

What made the Challenge Round unique is giving opportunities to new players to beat previous winners.

The Challenge Round would give them the drive and motivation for the competition. Since playing consecutively with the same opponent is not allowed, then it's played for a longer time than usual. The Challenger can have longer preparation to compete against the higher-placed player, thus having more chances of winning.

The Advantage of the Challenge Round

The Challenge Round follows the ladder system, so any participants can't be eliminated even after losing. The challenger can decide who she wants to play against, yet playing for the same higher-placed player won't be possible in a consecutive match.

Playing in the Challenge Round will give you more chances of winning.

The Disadvantage of the Challenge Round

One of the disadvantages when participating in the Challenge Round is the allotted time for the game.

The maximum number of participants in the Challenge Round is about 60 players, so considering the number of participants, it would take a very long time to determine who the winner is.
