Karin Knapp is a retired Italian tennis player. She won two singles titles on the WTA Tour and added six singles and six doubles titles on the ITF Circuit. Knapp achieved her career-best singles ranking of World No. 33 in August 2015 and reached No. 49 in the WTA doubles rankings in September 2015.

Karin Knapp was born on June 28, 1987, in Bruneck, in Italy’s South Tyrol province. She stands 180 cm tall and she plays right-handed with a two-handed backhand.

Her father, Alois, was a fabric manufacturer, and her mother, Marianne, a retired school teacher. She has two brothers, Stefan and Michael, and was introduced to tennis at the age of seven by her parents. Throughout her career, Knapp was known for her solid baseline play and mental toughness on court.

She was a big fan of Kim Clijsters and lived in Anzio, Italy, during her playing days.

Career

Knapp turned professional in 2002 and gradually established herself on the ITF and WTA Tours.

Her breakthrough on the WTA circuit came with her first singles title at the Grand Prix SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem in Marrakech in 2014. She captured her second WTA singles title at the Nürnberger Versicherungscup in Nuremberg in 2015.

Her best Grand Slam singles result was reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2013, and she also made the third round at the French Open (2007, 2008, 2016) and the US Open (2013).

In doubles, Knapp reached the third round of all four Grand Slam tournaments and peaked at a career-high ranking of No. 49.

Knapp was part of Italy’s victorious Fed Cup team in 2013, contributing to the country’s win and compiling a 3–3 Fed Cup singles record.

She retired from professional tennis in May 2018 after battling multiple injuries throughout her career.
