Born on November 17, 1973, Wayne black is the brother of another pro tennis player Byron Black. He was introduced to the game by his father who built a grassland court in the family’s avocado farm where his children could practice the sport. He turned pro in 1994.

Black attended Newcomb tennis academy in Texas and played for three seasons while he was attending the University of Southern California. He won singles and doubles titles between 1993 and 1994 along with All-American honors during these years. He advanced to the NCAA championships singles finals in 1994. He was also a member of the Davis Cup since 1992.

Black posted his first career tour victory in 1994 in New Haven. A year later he reached his first Challenger finals in Azores. He won his first Grand Slam title in men’s doubles in the 2001 US Open and again in 2005 at the Australian Open. He also won two Grand Slam titles in mixed doubles at the 2002 French Open and the 2004 Wimbledon with his sister Cara. He also won a title a few years before that with brother Byron in Chennai.

In 2003 he placed 10th in the ATP team race with Kevin Ullyett. He reached the third round at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open. In 2004, Black advanced to the quarterfinals at the Olympics and US Open.

He retired from the doubles circuit at the later part of 2005. Black was coached by ATO player Miles MacLagan. He currently resides in Harare, Zimbabwe.
