José Higueras is a Spanish former professional tennis player and a highly successful coach, known for his ability to develop world-class talent. As a player, he won 16 singles titles and achieved a career-high singles ranking of World No. 6.

He was also a member of the Spanish team that won the inaugural World Team Cup in 1978 and, as a coach, guided Michael Chang and Jim Courier to major championships and World No. 1 rankings.

Professional Career

Higueras's professional playing career spanned from 1976 to 1986. During this time, he won 16 top-level singles titles and was a prominent force on the tour. He achieved his career-high singles ranking of World No. 6 in 1983.

Higueras was a consistent threat at the French Open, reaching the semifinals of the tournament in both 1982 and 1983. He was also a member of the Spanish team that won the inaugural World Team Cup in 1978.

After retiring as a player in 1986, Higueras transitioned into a coaching career where he found even greater success.

He helped coach Michael Chang to the 1989 French Open title. In a highly successful partnership with Brad Stine, Higueras coached Jim Courier to two French Open titles and two Australian Open titles, helping him reach the World No. 1 singles ranking in 1992. His list of notable clients also includes Todd Martin, Sergi Bruguera, Carlos Moya, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, and Shahar Pe'er.

In September 2008, Higueras was named the director of coaching for elite player development at the United States Tennis Association (USTA).
