John Thorneycroft Hartley was born on January 9, 1849 in Tong, Shropshire. John Hartley is known as a remarkable English tennis player and he hails from England.

Aside from that, John Hartley is also considered as the first ever clergyman to get a hold of his victory at the Wimbledon. Also, John Hartley is a winner of the All Corner's Final wherein he took his win in the Gentleman's Singles title in 1879 due to default decision right after Frank Hadow-the 1878 Champion that failed to keep a tight grip of his Singles title. The next year, Hartley was able to keep his title by winning against Herbert Lawford with scores 6-3, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 of their entire rigid match.

However, in the 1881 Gentleman's Singles Final, John Hartley failed to defeat William Renshaw, the brother of another famous tennis player James Ernest Renshaw. Hartley lost in this match for only thirty seven minutes with scores 0-6, 1-6, and 1-6 of the entire game.

Apart from John Hartley's sports-oriented life, John Hartley then asked for Alice Margaret Lascelles's hand for marriage in 1875. Alice is the granddaughter of the third Earl of Harewood, Henry Lascelles. Unfortunately, John Hartley and Alice were not blessed with any children in their marriage. In 1926, John Hartley was recognized at the Golden Jubilee championships and was given with a Silver medal by Queen Mary herself as being one of the surviving thirty four champions in the line of tennis sports.

On August 21, 1953, at the age of 86, on August 21, 1953 death took John Hartley's breath in Knaresborough, Yorkshire. John Hartley had a good life with his wife before his death.
