Kerry Melville Reid
One of the greatest Austalian woman tennis players is Kerry Melville Reid. She was born on August 7, 1947 in Mosman, New South Wales. The highlight of her career is the Grand Slam singles title that she won in 1977.
Her career started at the Australian Open in 1963 where she competed until the third round of the championship. She had better luck in 1966 where she reached the semifinals of the Australian Open, as well as the US Open. In 1970, she placed second to Margaret Court in the women’s singles of the Australian Open. In 1972, she also ranked second to King in the US Open. Reid was consistently in the world’s top ten list for the 12 years of her professional career. She has consecutively won at least one tournament per year from 1966 through 1979. Reid’s highest ranking achieved was World No. 5 for four years in 1971 through 1974. She took home the Australian Championships doubles title with her partner, Karen Krantzcke in 1968. She took home the same title with her partner Mona Guerrant in 1977. In 1978, she won the women’s doubles title of the famous Wimbledon, with her partner Wendy Turnbull.
Reid was also the anchor of the World Team Tennis in 1974 through 1978. She was also a part of the breakaway group called “houston 9” which was the core of the women’s professional tennis tour in 1971.
She married Grover Reid in 1975, and retired from her professional career in 1977. She now resides in South Carolina where she raised two beautiful daughters.
