József Asbóth is the first and so far the only Hungarian Tennis Player to win a grand slam singles title during the Rollan Garros French Open 1947. He made his grand slam stint in 1939 but he lost the match and then the Second World War broke out and it was only in 1947 that Hungary was readmitted to the tennis scene internationally. He was only twenty nine (29) when he beats Tom Brown in straight sets during the semis. József Asbóth defeated Eric W. Sturgees 8-6 7-5 6-4 in the finals. József Asbóths’ victory at the Rollan Garros exposes him to International fame.

In the 1956 French Open József Asbóth made his last grand slam appearance where he lost during the third round to Kurt Nielsen in five sets. He turned professional in 1958.

He was a semi finalist in 1948, in which he places third in Wimbledon. In Wimbledon József overcame Sturgess in five sets during the fourth round and Tom Brown in the quarters before losing to John Bromwich in the semis.

József Asbóth held a David’s cup record of twenty four (24) wins and seventeen (17) loses. József Asbóth became responsible in setting up the Belgian Tennis Federation; this was after his professional career. He then became a trainer in Munich. After staying in Munich for a number of years, he died at the age of sixty nine on September 22, 1986.. Back in his home town - , Szombathely, a street bears his name since 1993.
