Guillermo Vilas was born on August 17, 1952, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He stands 1.80 m (5 ft 11 in) tall and plays left-handed with a one-handed backhand.

Vilas is known for his prowess on clay courts, winning over 650 matches on the surface, an all-time record. After living as an "international playboy" for most of his adult life, he married Phiangphathu Khumueang in 2005.

They have three daughters and one son and reside in Monaco. In 2020, it was reported that he was suffering from a form of dementia.

Professional Career

Vilas turned professional in 1968. He was a dominant force in the sport, particularly on clay courts.

His peak was the 1977 season, during which he won 16 ATP singles titles, including the French Open and the U.S. Open. He had a 53-match winning streak on clay, the longest in the Open Era at the time.

In the ATP rankings, he peaked at World No. 2 in April 1975, a position he held for 83 weeks. He won four singles major titles and the 1974 Tour Finals. He also won 16 doubles titles, and was a member of the Argentine Davis Cup team that reached the finals in 1969, 1971, and 1972.

He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1991. Vilas retired from professional tennis in 1992.
