Mark Hume McCormack was born on November 6, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He graduated from Yale Law School in 1954 and briefly practiced law before establishing his groundbreaking career.McCormack was an athlete in his youth and married his second wife, Betsy Nagelsen-McCormack, a two-time Australian Open doubles champion, in 1986. The couple co-founded the McCormack–Nagelsen Tennis Center at the College of William & Mary.
McCormack passed away on May 16, 2003, from complications after a cardiac event.

McCormack founded International Management Group (IMG) in 1960 by securing a handshake deal with golf legend Arnold Palmer, establishing athlete representation as a viable business model.This innovation shaped the face of sports and ensured the financial luxury of star athletes, including tennis legends like Rod Laver, Pete Sampras, Serena Williams, and Venus Williams. He greatly expanded tennis’s commercial appeal by pioneering television coverage and negotiating marketing rights for major tournaments, including for Wimbledon.
He was instrumental in establishing the U.S. Open venue in Forest Hills and promoted tennis as a major sport in schools and colleges. In 1990, he was named the "Most Powerful Man in Sports" by Sporting News.
