Bethanie Mattek
Reaching a career-high singles ranking of 38 and number 24 for the career-high doubles, Bethany Mattek-Sands is well known not only for her athletic skills but her unconventional fashion. From leopard outfits to big bold earrings to designer cowboy hats, a tennis game with her can never be as exciting.
Born on March 23, 1985 in Rochester, Minnesota Bethany is now residing in Miami, Florida. She is married to Jason Sands, an insurance executive from Naples, Florida on November 29, 2008.
Bethany’s hard training from Phoenix, Arizona earned her three doubles titles and 5 singles titles on the ITF Circuit.
Bethany received a wildcard into the qualifying level of the WTA Tour in Philadelphia. This was her first ever professional tour and was defeated by Nana Miyagi. For the second time, she again got a wildcard into the qualifying round at the Lipton International Players Championship held at Key Biscayne, Florida. Again, Bethany lost game to Anca Barna. For the third time, Mattek received another wildcard to the qualifying round of the U.S. Open Grand Slam later that year and she lost a game to 28th seed Gisela Riera.
In 2001, another wildcard was presented to Mattek for the qualifying level of the Ericsson Open held at Key Biscayne, Florida. She won her first game over Catalina Castano but lost the second to Sandra Cacic.
So far, Mattek’s best performance to date was when she reached the semi-finals of the 2005 and 2008 WTA Tour in Cincinnati, Ohio and Birmingham, United Kingdom respectively. She was also able to get into the 2008 Bell Challenge finals. Under the doubles category, Bethany was able to take home at least four WTA Tour championship titles.
A member of the World Team Tennis, Mattek also plays for the New York Sportimes.
