Knowles started playing tennis when he was just four years old under the tutelage of his parents. By the time Knowles reached ten years old, he received an invitation to train at the Nick Bolleteri Tennis Academy which was located in Brandenton, Florida.

Later on, he went off to UCLA where he continued his progress in tennis. By and by, he won the All American honors and then went on to play professionally in 1991.

The said year did not end in vain since the partners reached the final rounds at Wimbledon and Roland Garros. It was during that year that Knowles also reached the top rank in doubles which marked a huge achievement for all the hard work that he had done.
Despite the fact that Knowles and Nestor announced the end of their successful 12 year partnership, Knowles and Nestor managed to go out with a bang and win the 2007 French Open before parting ways.
