Mahesh Bhupathi
Mahesh Shrinivas Bhupathi is an Indian professional tennis player. He was born on June 07, 1974 in Chennai, India and is married to Indian model Shvetha Jaishankar Bhupathi. He is considered as one of the best doubles players in the whole world, and is known for being the first Indian to have ever won a Grand Slam tournament.
Bhupati is a graduate of the University of Mississippi and entered the world of tennis as a professional in 1995. It was in 1999, however, that Bhupathi made headlines by winning three titles playing doubles. His partner during those games was Leander Paes, and their wins included a title at Wimbledon and another at Roland Garros. Due to those wins, Bhupathi and Leander became the first pair to reach the final rounds of all the Grand Slams. During the same year, Bhupathi even won the U.S. Open playing in mixed doubles together with Japanese player Ai Sugiyama.
Through his career, he has paired with great players and together with his respective partners have reaped great awards for their efforts. One of his notable partners was Martina Hingis when they played in the Australian Open. It was his win during the Australian Open that completed his record of winning all Grand Slams.
As early as the opening of 2009, Bhupathi and his partner Sania Mirza achieved another feat by winning the Australian Open in the mixed doubles. The pair defeated Andy Ram and Nathalie Dechy during the final round at the game held in Melbourne, Australia.
Throughout Bhupathi’s career, he only has a record of 10-28 in singles, landing only at No. 217 in the world ranks. However, his doubles record is another matter as he has a record of 620-307. He holds 56 career titles, peaking at the World ranks at No. 1. Currently, he is ranked at No. 6 as of September 2011, and he has a total of 11 Grand Slam titles in both mixed doubles and doubles.
