Born on November 2, 1879 in Nevada, United States, Marion Farquhar was famously known as the first American woman to compete at Wimbledon in 1900. Not only did she manage to get in and compete, she was also able to reach as far as the quarterfinals. However, Marion didn’t only make history in Wimbledon, she also made history to a place close to home. Marion was the first Californian to reach the finals of the Women’s US Championships in the year 1898. In 1899 and 1902, she managed to claim the title. Her US Championship career record stood at an impressive 17-3 win-loss.

Marion did not only succeed in the singles circuit, she also turned heads in the doubles circuit. The highlight of her career in doubles was when she won the US Mixed Championships in 1901 and then the Women’s Doubles in 1902. Marion was paired with British tennis star, Laurie Doherty, for an international pairing and they made a great team.

Marion was not done making history in tennis yet. In 1900, she became one of the first Americans to play in the Paris Olympics. She came out quite the victor, winning bronze in both the singles and mixed doubles category.

Marion’s success and honed talent in tennis was owed to countless practices at the West Side Tennis Club in New York with sister, Georgina, who also happens to be a tennis player.

For her outstanding performance and continuous contributions to the sport of tennis, Marion was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in the year 2006.
