Gilles Muller
Gilles Muller is known as “Mulles”. He is born to Marcel, a postal worker, and Miriam, a housewife. Patrick, his brother, works in a security company. Muller was born on May 9, 1983 in Luxemburg. He now lives in Leudelange, Luxemburg. The whole family moved to France when he was 16 years old.
He was the number one junior player in the world in 2001. He won the championship title of the U.S. Open junior in 2001 when he defeated Wang. He held the runner-up position at the Wimbledon tournament when Valent won a game over him that same year.
In 2001, Gilles made his first appearance in the Davis Cup. He posted a 2-3 record in at least three ties. He won his first singles Futures Championship title in Kuwait and the doubles title with Scheidweiler at the Luxemburg Futures. In 2003, he was a qualifier to the Copenhagen ATP event for the first time but lost a game to Lisnard. After a year, he was the first player from Luxemburg who improved his 120th position and finished at the top 100.
In 2005, he reached the third round at the Indian Wells and defeated Stepanek and Lisnard. Later, he lost a game to Federer. In 2007, he began a season by joining the second round in the Australian Open where he defeated Gaudio and lost to Davydenko. He reached the quarterfinals at the Durban Challenger and the semi-finals at the Besancon Challenger where he was defeated by Roger-Vasselin. He was also a qualifier at the Wimbledon tournament where he won a game in to Hernandez but eventually lost to Ferrero.
Although Muller struggled with injuries sometime from 2009 to 2013, he has managed to get back on the top 50 in 2014. Eventually, he broke through to the Top 40 in 2015 and was able to enjoy his best year in his career in 2017.
Muller has a career record of 229-202, and has 2 career titles to his name. He is ranked at No. 29 as of April 2018, but the highest rank he reached was at No. 21, which he achieved in July 2017. He also does not have a Grand Slam title to his name, but he has reached the quarterfinal round of the US Open and Wimbledon.
