Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard was born on July 8, 2003, in Lyon, France, where he still resides. Standing an imposing 203 cm tall, he plays right-handed with a one-handed backhand. Perricard is coached by Emmanuel Planque and has steadily progressed through the professional ranks since turning pro in 2021.He comes from a sporting family; his father Ghislain Mpetshi-Kalongo was a semi-professional footballer, and his younger sister, Daphnée Perricard, is also plays tennis. Through his father, Giovanni has Congolese heritage.
Career
Perricard’s junior career included winning the 2021 French Open boys’ doubles title with compatriot Arthur Fils and reaching the semifinals in the singles tournament. He turned professional in 2021 and won his first ATP Challenger singles title at the León Open in 2023.He made his Grand Slam main draw debut at the 2023 French Open after receiving a wildcard but lost in the first round. Later that year, he reached his first ATP quarterfinal at the European Open in Antwerp, defeating seeded players including Roberto Carballés Baena and David Goffin before falling to eventual champion Alexander Bublik. This run helped him break into the top 200.
In 2024, Perricard won back-to-back Challenger titles in Mexico and captured his first ATP Tour title at the Lyon Open as a wildcard, defeating Tomás Martín Etcheverry in a tight final.
He became the lowest-ranked champion in the tournament’s history and climbed to a career-high ranking of No. 66.
During the 2024 grass season, he qualified for the Queen’s Club Championships and upset sixth seed Ben Shelton in the first round, moving into the top 60. At Wimbledon, entering as a lucky loser, he recorded his first Grand Slam match win against 20th seed Sebastian Korda in a five-set thriller before reaching the fourth round.
Later in 2024, Perricard won his first ATP 500 title at the Swiss Indoors Basel, defeating Shelton in the final. This victory propelled him to a new career-high ranking of No. 31.
