She was also a junior basketball champion before dedicating herself to tennis at the age of 14.

Maret Ani was born on January 31, 1982, in Tallinn, Estonia. She stands 175 cm tall and she plays right-handed with a two-handed backhand.She currently resides in Rakvere, Estonia. Ani was a junior basketball champion before choosing to pursue a career in tennis from the age of 14. She later moved to Italy to train after securing sponsorship for coaching.
Professional Career
Ani turned professional in 1997. In the singles category, she won seven titles on the ITF Circuit and reached a career-high singles ranking of World No. 63 in May 2006. At the start of 2006, she was the top-ranked player in Estonia. Her best Grand Slam singles results were first-round appearances at all four major tournaments.In doubles, Ani was more successful, winning 17 titles on the ITF Circuit and achieving a career-high ranking of World No. 39 in April 2004. Her best Grand Slam doubles result was a semifinal appearance at the Australian Open in 2004. Ani played for the Estonia Billie Jean King Cup (formerly Fed Cup) team for many years, accumulating a win-loss record of 43–25. She represented Estonia at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games. Ani retired from professional tennis in 2011.
