Julia Gorges is a retired professional tennis player, who was ranked World Number 9 at the WTA Rankings in 2018. Gorges landed at the World Top 100 in 2008, after reaching the fourth round in multiple Grand Slam tournaments. She was able to break through the Top 10 in the same year when she reached the semifinals in the 2018 Wimbledon Open. In October 2020, she announced that she will be retiring from tennis, which is just two away from her 32nd birthday.
First WTA Breakthrough
Gorges had an unfortunate start in 2010 when she was defeated by Yanina Wickmayer during the first round at the Auckland Open. She proceeded to the Australian Open but suffered a loss in the second round.
After Auckland Open and Australian Open, she started to strive a little more, by reaching the quarterfinals of the Strasburg Open. By the following month, she lost again at the French by the second round and Wimbledon by the 1st round, but she managed to reach the semifinals in the Palermo Open before losing to Flavia Pennetta.
Gorges joined the US OPen and managed to defeat Romina Oprandi in the first round. At Japan Open, she made it to the quarterfinals before losing to Coco Vandeweghe. Throughout the year, her performances on improving that she was able to reach her second WTA career final, yet she was defeated by Roberta Vinci.
Consistency in the Top 20
Gorges is a talented and persistent player as she proved it in her performances in 2012, where she managed to get into the Top 20. She also became one of the top-seeded players at the Auckland Open, where she successfully defeated Greta Arn, the defending champion.
She was able to carry more doubles performances with Flavia Pennetta at the Auckland Open and the duo managed to reach the final round before they regretfully lost to Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka.
