Gianluca Mager is an Italian professional tennis player, who is currently ranked at Number 62 for the singles division as of November 2021. Mager was born and raised in Liguria, where his family was known with German descendants.
Tennis Career
Mager first appeared as a professional tennis player at the 2017 Internazionali BNL d’Italia when he earned a wildcard during the pre-qualifying wildcard tournament. However, he got lost by Aljaz Bedene during the first round.
He advances in the first round of the Stockholm Open after he encountered Pablo Andujar in the court. By 2020, he joined the Rio Open and defeated some top-seeded tennis players such as Casper Ruud, Attila Balazs, and Dominic Thiem. This was his first time reaching the ATP Tour Final, however, he was defeated by Cristian Garin. After his spectacular performance at the Rio Open, his ranking advances to World Number 77.
Mager is coached by his girlfriend, Valentine Confalonieri, who was a former tennis player.
Mager’s Marijuana Controversies
Mager was involved in a major controversy when he was disqualified to compete after he failed the doping party at the young age of 16. Despite him denying all the allegations and being completely innocent of what happened, he was given a 4-month suspension. This made him almost stop playing tennis. Fortunately, he met Diego Nargiso who put him back on track and restore his enthusiasm for the sport.
When asked if cannabis can improve his performance, he replied that cannabis can only make his performance worse. When he moved on from the unfortunate situation, Mager shared that he is fixed to do everything to be in the Top 10.
