Gonzales was born on July 20, 1983, in Tandil, Argentina. His full name is Maximo Gonzales Mareira. He stands 173 centimeters tall and his last listed weight is 75 kilograms. He is a right-handed player and he has a two-handed backhand.
Nicknamed, Machi, Gonzales started playing tennis when he was four years old. He shares a hometown with other pro tennis players Juan Martin del Potro, Deigo Junquiera, Mariano Zabaleta, and Juan Monaco.
Growing up, he was a fan of football legends Pete Sampras and Diego Maradona.
Prior to turning pro in 2002, he attended the San Jose College in Tandil. In addition to tennis, he enjoys playing poker and he continues to follow football. His favorite tournament to play in is the French Open and he has stated that his best match was against Roger Federer at the 2008 US Open.
Career
Gonzales turned pro in 2002 and 2004, he won two Futures events. In 2005, he joined the Challenger circuit. By the end of 2005, he had made it to No.206 in the world. He played in his first ATP event in 2007. He won his first Challenger title in the same year.
Further successes saw his ranking rise. By September 2007, he had risen to No.125. He reached his career-high ranking of No.58 in April 2009.
As a double’s player, he reached his first Semi-Finals at a Grand Slam event in 2008 at the US Open. He was partnered with Juan Monaco. He would finish well at a Grand Slam event again until 2014 when reached the Quarterfinals at the 2014 French Open double’s event.
In 2018, he reached the Quarter Finals of the French Open again. In 2019, he made it to the 3R of the Australian Open. His latest appearances at Grand Slam doubles events include the Australian Open in 2021 where he made it to the 3R. In the same year, he made it to the semi-finals at Wimbledon.
