Young Donald was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA on July 23, 1989. He now lives in Atlanta, Georgia, USA with his immediate family. At age 15, Donald won the junior championship title at the Australian Open. He was then the first male American to win the title and finished number 1 in 2000 after Andy Roddick. He was also known to be the youngest and the first ever African-American to get the number 1 position in the world of tennis. He turned professional in 2004. In December 27 that year, he was featured in the “Who’s Next?” Newsweek Magazine.
Donald started playing tennis when he was three years old with his parents. His father, Donald, Sr, and mother Illona, were both professional trainers of the sport. They both managed the South Fulton Tennis Centre in College Park Georgia. Donald Sr. started running the tennis centre in 2003. The young Donald was also into table tennis and board games when he is not practicing tennis. He likes Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, and Pete Sampras. Today, making tennis his full time career, Donald occasionally trains at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida together with Nick Bollettieri. He is coached by parents and with Mike Sell of USTA, former ATP pro.
