Monica Puig
Monica Puig is a female Puerto Rican professional tennis player born on September 27, 1993 in San Juan. She is currently residing in Chicago, United States and plays right-handed with a two-handed backhand. Kamau Murray and Othmane Garma coach her.
Before she started playing professionally in 2010, she reached the Junior Grand Slam finals in Melbourne. She reached the top 200 in 2012 by reaching the finals of Poza Rica and winning her first tournament at Joue-les-Tours. In 2013, she entered the top 100 and was ranked world number 56 after her performance at the Portugal Open, French Open, and at Wimbledon.
In 2014, she achieved her first WTA final title after defeating Silvia Soler Espinosa at Strasbourg. She had her breakthrough year in 2016 and even won an Olympic Gold Medal in Rio de Janeiro. Puig’s performance went downhill from 2017and she suffered from hip injuries in 2018.
Since turning pro, Puig has a career record of 284 victories and 189 losses. She also won 2 WTA and 6 ITF career titles in singles. In doubles, she has a career record of 17 victories and 30 losses. The highest rank she achieved was at No. 27, which she attained on September 26, 2016. Currently, she is ranked at No. 54 as of January 14, 2019. Puig still has to win a Grand Slam tournament but has already made appearances at the four Grand Slam events.
