Mona Barthel is a professional tennis player of German descent. She was born on July 11, 1990 in Bad Segeberg, Western Germany, and she turned pro in 2009. Barthel was raised in a family that played tennis, so it was not a surprise when she showed interest in the sport when she was just 3 years old. Barthel has stated that she favors hard courts but also likes all court types.

Barthel played her first ever event in her career at the ITF Circuit in 2007. The following year, she then participated at her first WTA qualifying which was held at Stuttgart. Fast track to a couple of years later when she had her first Top 100 season in 2011. At the same time, Barthel also won titles in the ITF Circuit.

Through the years, Barthel mostly ranked somewhere around the Top 50 areas, although at times she dropped out of the Top 100. In 2017, she stood at rank No. 4 in Germany, behind Maria, Goerges, and Kerber. She was able to reach the semifinals in Tashkent and Budapest, while finishing at world rank number 81 in the 2018.
