Andreas Haider-Maurer
Austrian tennis player Andreas Haider-Maurer was born on March 22, 1987 in Zwettl, Austria. He started playing tennis at the age of seven and played as practice partner with the Austrian Davis Cup team in Chile in September 2009. He is coached by Karel Van Wyk.
He qualified for the US Open for the first time in 2010. He faced off against world number 5 Robin Soderling in a game that lasted up to the fifth set before losing the match. It was also in 2010 when he reached the final in his home tournament, the Bank Austria Tennis tournament, where he lost to defending champion Jurgan Melzer.
"I’m happy with the first final, but I was up 7-6, 5-3, I served for the match. I had big chances to win this title, but it’s the first time. I was a little bit nervous. Jurgen played good in this moment, and I lost. For sure I had a dream come true because now I’m near Top 100, and this is my next goal. I can learn a lot for the future and I’m happy," the Austrian told press after his loss.
This win propelled him to a then career high ranking of world number 115 in the South African Airways ATP rankings in 2010. Haider-Maurer reached a career high ranking in singles on May 2, 2011, when he reached the 87th spot.
