Sybille Bammer was born on April 27, 1980, in Linz, Austria, where she also resided throughout her career. Standing 174 cm tall and weighing 63 kg, Sybille Bammer played left-handed with a two-handed backhand.

She began playing tennis at age 11, introduced to the sport by her mother, Elisabeth. She was coached by Jürgen Waber and has earned around US$1.7 million in prize money.

Bammer took a break from the tour at age 21 to give birth to her daughter, Tina, before returning to professional tennis—a rare path in the sport. Supported by her partner Christophe Gschwendtner, who paused his own career to help raise their daughter.

Career

She turned pro in 1997. After returning from maternity leave in 2002, she quickly regained form, winning several ITF titles and making her debut for Austria’s Fed Cup team. Her breakthrough came in 2005, when she cracked the top 100 and made her Grand Slam main draw debut at the US Open.

In 2007, Sybille Bammer claimed her first WTA singles title at the Pattaya Open, becoming the first mother to win a tour title since 1989. That year, she also reached the semifinals at Indian Wells and the fourth round of the French Open, finishing the season ranked inside the top 20.

In 2008, Bammer reached the quarterfinals of the US Open, her best Grand Slam result, and achieved notable victories over top players, including multiple wins against Serena Williams.

She was a regular member of Austria’s Fed Cup and Olympic teams and earned respect for her determination and professionalism. Bammer retired from professional tennis in 2011, leaving a legacy as Austria’s highest-ranked female player of her era and a pioneer for mothers in tennis.
