Born Jarmila Gajdošová on April 26, 1987, in Slovakia, Groth is a female professional tennis player who now plays for Australia after she obtained her Australian citizenship. Groth turned pro in 2005 after attaining quite a successful amateur career.
As a junior, Groth reached the semifinals at two junior Grand Slams. She also won in doubles at the Italian Open junior tournament with Andrea Hlaváčková in 2003. Right after she turned 14 Groth competed in the ITF for the first time, entering into a total of 3 ITF tournaments before the year was over. In 2002 she entered three more tournaments, winning four matches and losing in three. By 2003, she qualified for her first WTA event as a wild card and defeated all three of her opponents in the qualifiers.
In 2005 Groth won two singles titles in the ITF and by 2006 she had entered the top 100, making her top 100 début on April 3. She won one WTA doubles title, four in singles and three doubles in the ITF. A year later she added additional ITF titles, four in singles and two in doubles. A year later, Groth reached the QF in Estoril.
She entered the top 50 in 2010, the same year she won her first WTA title at Guangzhou. She also won one singles title in the ITF, before withdrawing from a tournament in Copenhagen due to a bone bruise. She started 2011 at the Brisbane International, where she reached the QF after defeating countrywoman and top seed Samantha Stosur, her first victory over a top 10 player. It was also in this year that she competed for the Australian Fed Cup team for the first time.
After her separation from fellow Aussie tennis player Samuel Groth in April 2011, Jarmila went back to using her maiden name. She is now listed in the official WTA rankings as Jarmila Gajdošová.
